Chris Rea’s lyrics set to raise £3,000 for charity

THE original scrap of paper on which Middlesbrough’s Chris Rea scribbled the lyrics of one of his biggest hits, The Road To Hell, is set to raise up to £3,000 for a children’s cancer charity.

Britain’s top songwriters - including Rea, Take That’s Gary Barlow and ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney - were invited to donate sets of their handwritten lyrics for an auction in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust set to raise at least £51,600.

And the kind-hearted Rea was among the quickest to respond.

Rea wrote The Road To Hell while he was in a car at the M4-M25 intersection during the winter of 1988.

Now, 22 years later, the lined notepaper on which Rea wrote those valuable lyrics - as well as details of his favourite Indian takeaway and a reminder, in purple ink, to “phone Brenda” - is coming up for sale at Bonhams in London on December 15 and it is expected to fetch between £2,000 and £3,000.

Rea’s album, The Road To Hell, reached number one in the UK charts in November 1989 and the single reached the UK top 10 in 1989.

Rea was born in Middlesbrough on March 4, 1951, and did casual labouring jobs and worked for his father’s ice cream business before he became a pop star

. He was 22 when he bought his first guitar. He started off with the Middlesbrough band Magdalene and has now sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.

Other lyrics in the auction include: Back For Good by Gary Barlow (pre-sale estimates £1,500 to £2,500); Run Back To Your Side by Eric Clapton (£1,500 to £2,500); Thriller by Rod Temperton (£3,000 to £5,000); Why don’t we do it in the road? by McCartney (£8,000 to £12,000) and Message In A Bottle by Sting (£1,500 to £2,000).

Hi,
It's a shame but they did not sell. I wonder what the reserve price was. For such a good cause too.
