rare 7" and 12" singles

Post by tobi777 »

Hi everyone,

which singles do You consider as rare items? I've noticed that some singles for example frequently pop up on ebay but others don't. Some singles seem to be quite rare:

- Seabird (1979)
- All Summer Long (1985)
- Giverny (1986)
- Wired To The Moon (1984)
- Hey You (1983)
- Ace Of Hearts (1984) double 7" with "Bitter Sweet" / "Auf immer" on 2nd single
- Gonna Buy A Hat (1987)
- Since I Don't See You Anymore (1981)

Even the blue coloured Deltics LP and the red "Whatever..." 7" seem to be more frequent than those above.
Has it something to do with the region I'm from (Germany)?

Any other items that you're thinking of?

Hi Toby!

You are quite right, all these singles are really rare since all of them were local (mostly Holland only) and the number of copies was very scarce.

Each of these singles was released as an extra local single after the major international sinlgles.

Seabird was released only in Holland in addition to 2 main singles from Deltics (Diamonds and Raincoat):
http://www.discogs.com/Chris-Rea-Seabir ... se/7038993

Since I Don't See You Anymore was released in US, Italy and again Holland after 2 major singles (Tennis and Dancing Girls): http://www.discogs.com/Chris-Rea-Since- ... ter/589142

Hey You was an extra single for Holland after Heartbeat, Loose and Love's Strange Ways: http://www.discogs.com/Chris-Rea-Hey-Yo ... se/5353601

Wired to the Moon - again Holland only extra single (the 5th one from the 9-track album!)
The same with All Summer Long and Giverny singles, judging by their codes (6-digit number beginning from 1)

Gonna Buy a Hat seems to be a German-only single (6-digit code starting from 88 ): http://www.discogs.com/Chris-Rea-Gonna- ... se/6263330

None of these singles contain any unique B-sides, and neither of them was successful. I never could understand why would record labels release such singles which never hit the big time.

To this list I can add Goodbye Little Columbus (German only 7"), Don't Want Your Best Friend (US only 7") and Spanish version of Fool 7" (Voy a Volverme Loco).

By the way I bought the blue Deltics LP for a heap of money as something super rare, but saw it not once again for sale, so not quite a rarity. US release of Water Sign with a different cover is much more of a rare gem, for instance.

Thanks again for starting an amazing topic!

Best regards
Andrey

Hi Andrey,

as always many thanks for the quick reply and Your remarks!

The 7" of "All Summer Long" (1985) I have got was at least printed in Germany - I don't know if it was also released there.

I also own a 7" of "Don't Want Your Best Friend" with "Raincoat..." as a B-side and this was a german release!

I was surprised to see the blue Deltics LP appearing quite regularly on Ebay but I don't know the original number of copies released. Sometimes the coloured vinyl versions are even more frequent than the black ones (e.g. the 12" of "Sweet Talkin' Woman" by E.L.O.) and the so the black copies are more valuable. This may not be the case here but maybe they printed - at least in the UK - a lot of blue ones.

Cheers
Tobi

You are always welcome, Tobias!

Yes, 1985 All Summer Long appears to be pan-European release, however, still rather scarce since it was a kind of addition to Josephine and Stainsby singles and only had one pressing: http://www.discogs.com/Chris-Rea-All-Su ... se/1683388

And Don't Want Your Best friend was a double A side single in Germany too: http://www.discogs.com/Chris-Rea-Dont-W ... se/2825499

I recall black vinyl pressing of Whatever Happened UK 7" was more rare tha the red one. Also a good example is Queen's Made in Heaven original 1995 vinyl issue, more common in coloured vinyl, while black pressings were extremely rare.

Thanks again for a nice talk
Best regards

I bought the rare "Hey You" single for a good price at: http://www.cdandlp.com/de/

"Seabird" seems really hard to get. I will keep my eyes open.

Hi Anneke and Tobias,

not a place to buy at, but a good database for rare singles with pictures and metadata, e.g., here are seemingly all of Chris Rea 7''s released in Holland: http://www.45cat.com/45_search.php?sm=r ... etherlands

And by the way, several videos with Chris (Josephine, Driving Home, Hello Friend, Que Sera, Diamonds, It's All Gone) from Dutch TV show TopPop by AVRO/TROS were published recently after the broadcasters merger: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... rea+toppop

Hope this may be of assistance/interest for you,

best wishes
Andrey

Hi Andrey,

Thanks for the last link, I will checkit out when I have time.
About Toppop, I follow them, since it is Dutch and have very good clips, from my childhood. It was my most favorite program as a kid and teenager.
Josephine is a wonderful example of not telling musicians what is going on during the show. The one who presents the show is saying goodbye and all kind of things starts happening during this clip. You see Chris looking very annoyed, mouthing "What?"to someone. This summer the host was looking back at this clip(and more of course) and told Chris Rea was very annoyed and years later they spoke with each other and the host explained the situation. And all was well. Just watch other clips and you ee for example Max Middleton on guitar :) Really funny.

Best wishes,
Anneke

Hi Anneke and thanks a lot for your answer with memories!

I usually avoid watching playback TV shows as for me the main thing is original/live music not the image, but I have checked out these videos of Chris from TopPop, being intrigued by your words on them!

On Hello Friend re-record Max Middleton plays not guitar but bass! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qmbzt-E-F0o

And the broadcast date is put incorrectly as 1986-1-1, in fact it is the same Christmas'86 show where Chris plays early version of Driving Home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrOAoNPdBb4

Hello Friend re-record / Driving Home was double A side single released in late 1986.

Thanks again and best wishes

Hi Andrey,

All is playback/mimed, so you see people not even trying to play instruments, or the ones they normally don't play.
Dutch fans are amused by this video's. I had a wonderful time when I saw them for the first time.
It's all show, didn't see that as a kid, but took it very serious.

Best wishes,
Anneke
